Odds On Horse Contenders at 2006 Breeders Cup

Breeders Cup 2006The main event of this year’s 2006 Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, without a doubt, is the Breeders Cup Classic. The 23rd renewal should live up to its name at Churchill Downs.

During five previous Breeders Cup Days at the historic Louisville track - home to the Kentucky Derby, there have been exciting Classic races: Tiznow edged Giant’s Causeway by a neck in 2000, Awesome Again defeated Silver Charm by three-quarters of a length in ‘98 and Alysheba beat Striking the Gold by a half-length in ‘89.

So don’t be surprised when the margin of victory in the Breeders Cup Classic is less than a length on Nov. 4.

That’s because the top Breeders Cup Classic contenders could have favorable odds and are classy horse racing campaigners on winning streaks:

Lava Man: The 5-year-old gelding has captured six stakes in a row during ‘06, including four Grade 1 races, and earned nearly $2.5 million. Four victories were at the Breeders Cup Classic distance of 1 ¼ miles while two were on the turf.

With five wins on the grass it’s no surprise his final prep on Saturday comes in the $250,000 Clement Hirsch Turf Championship at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting.

The son of Slew City Slew faces another gelding three years older who also is undefeated – the Tin Man, winner of this race in ‘02. His latest score in three outings: the Arlington Million in wire-to-wire fashion.

Bernardini:
The top sophomore has registered five consecutive triumphs since his fourth-place career debut back in January at Gulfstream Park, but it was a sprint.

Three Grade 1 wins include the Travers at the Breeders Cup Classic distance and the Preakness, with earnings exceeding $1.6 million.

The A. P. Indy colt that has likely clinched 3-year-old championship honors is on a collision course with one of his Breeders Cup Main Event foes in the $750,000 Jockey Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Oct. 7.

Saint Liam Wins Breeder's Cup Classic

Saint Liam did not disappoint expectations when he bagged the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic race at the 2005 Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships on Saturday, October 29 at Belmont Park, New York

This year's prime horse racing event also whipped up several surprises especially in the Distaff division where 30-1 long shot Pleasant Home stole the title from last year's winner and heavy favorite, Ashado, who only finished third this time.

Equally surprising is Lost In the Fog's loss to Silver Train in the Sprint division. Lost in the Fog, who entered the Sprint unbeaten in 10 starts, held a narrow advantage into the stretch before faltering through the final furlong to finish seventh as the 3-5 favorite.

Saint Liam held no.1 ranking in this year's World Thoroughbred Championship poll. This foal of Saint Ballado made his stakes debut rather inauspiciously, having sent away at 73-to-1 odds in the 2003 Arkansas Derby when finishing seventh by nearly 15 lengths. He entered 2005 to rise as the top-ranked Classic runner in the world after wins in the Donn, Stephen Foster and Woodward – all Grade 1s.

He has had a brilliant race record this year, and what a way to wrap it up.

Winning jockey Jerry Bailey won his Breeders' Cup-leading 15th race and fifth Classic. It also may have been his final ride in a Breeders' Cup event since he reportedly has been contemplating retirement. "If this was my last Breeders' Cup race, then it's a great way to go out," Bailey said.

Top 3 Contenders for 2005 Breeders' Cup Distaff

The Breeders' Cup Distaff (Grade 1) has produced three of the seven highest-priced winners in Breeders' Cup history to date. Keeping that in mind, this $2 million race for fillies and mares has actually been among the most consistent and predictable of the original seven Breeders' Cup races (not counting the Filly & Mare Turf, begun in 1999).

Here are this year's top 3 contenders:

Ashado
Post Position: 3
Jockey: John Velazquez
M/L Odds: 2-1

Once is not enough for champion filly Ashado. After capturing the 2004 Breeders' Cup Distaff title, she's back to defend her crown. Ahe also captured the 2004 Eclipse Award as Champion Three-Year-Old Filly with a season that saw her earn more than $2.2 on the year. She’s approaching $3.5 million overall. Incredibly has raced exclusively in graded stakes her entire career except for a debut maiden victory at Belmont in June of 2003, Asahdo is going for her second Eclipse award this year. The daughter of Saint Ballado and half-sister to current no. 1 World Thoroughbred contender, Saint Liam, being a winner is truly in her blood.

Stellar Jayne
Post Position: 2
Jockey: Jerry Bailey
M/L Odds: 5-1

Another filly making a comeback to this year's Breeders Cup Distaff is Stellar Jayne, she placed third in last year's race and out to pose another challenge to top rival, Ashado. This three-time Grade 1 winner of the Mother Goose, Gazelle, and most recently the Ruffian in mid-September, and an earner of more than $1.3 million, was retired end of last year. She was purchased for $3.6 million by Godolphin Racing and was sent to Dubai for the winter before returning to New York this spring with designs on a run at the Distaff. Stellar Jayne is nuts about Belmont Park, she has won four starts here in her career. All 3 of her career GI wins have been on this track.

Happy Ticket

Post Position: 7
Jockey: Victor Ezpinoza
M/L Odds: 6-1

Happy Ticket is enjoying a good career record by far. She has been 1st or 2nd in all her 12 career starts, which include an amazing 10 wins. She perhaps gained even more respect in defeat when stretching out to 1-1/8 miles and finishing a close second to defending Distaff champion Ashado in the Oct. 1 GI Beldame. This filly has shown great natural speed and certainly a sentimental choice, spending the summer and fall in New York after her home state of Louisiana was battered by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
